This book, published in 1996, by the head of the working group for Austrian military cartridges in the European Cartridge Research Association, has been anticipated for a number of years by many cartridge collectors and arms enthusiasts. Its subject is the military small arms ammunition used by the Austrian Armed Forces from 1866 to 1954. During this period, the Austrian Armed Forces used metallic cartridge calibers of almost exclusively Austrian origin. Beside these calibers, many early European experimental cartridges - tested by the Austrian Army between 1866 and the end of WW I - are described for the first time.
The results of the original research for this book are many new facts, newly discovered pre - WW I European military experimental calibers, and the identification of a quantity of Roth case and bullet numbers.
This book will be of great interest to forensic identification services, cartridge collectors, military museums, arms enthusiasts, the ammunition industry, and aviation historians (for the first time the Austrian special ammunition for air combat of WWI is described). Very interesting facts about the famous ammunition plant of Georg Roth and the connections between Austrian and German military ammunition development (e.g. 7,9 x 57 Mauser) are published here. For the non-German speaking reader, all the data sections and illustration descriptions are provided in English, as well as English summaries at the end of every section. In a second volume the following context is planned, beside additions to Vol. I:
- the small arms ammunition of the Austrian Armed and Security Forces
from 1955 to today;
- the military cartridges in foreign calibers produced in Austria from 1870
to today (mainly ammunition for export), and;
- the military cartridges in Austrian calibers produced in foreign countries.
